Sony is looking to breathe new life into the Men in Black universe, tapping writer Chris Bremner to develop the script for the next installment in the iconic sci-fi franchise. While no director or cast has been announced, the project marks the studio’s latest move to revive one of its most recognizable properties.
The original Men in Black, adapted from Lowell Cunningham’s Marvel Comics series and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, became a cultural phenomenon in 1997. Led by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as agents policing extraterrestrial activity on Earth, the film earned more than $580 million worldwide and spawned two sequels in 2002 and 2012.
Sony attempted to reboot the franchise in 2019 with Men in Black: International, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, though the film fell short of expectations and did not include Smith or Jones.
Bremner, known for shaping the recent Bad Boys sequels and the upcoming Netflix action film Fast and Loose, is now charged with crafting the next chapter of the extraterrestrial comedy series. Whether this new entry signals a full return to form for the franchise remains to be seen, but Sony is clearly aiming to restore the spark that made Men in Black a box-office powerhouse.
