André Holland, Wendell Pierce, Samira Wiley, Toussaint Francois Battiste, Anthony B. Jenkins, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and More Star in Boxing Drama ‘They Fight’
The ring is heating up in Sheldon Candis’ upcoming boxing drama ‘They Fight.’ André Holland and Wendell Pierce lead a star-studded ensemble in this highly anticipated film, inspired by Andrew Renzi’s 2018 documentary of the same name.
The story follows Walt Manigan (Holland), a highly skilled boxer and reformed ex-convict who returns home determined to rebuild his family with the love of his life, Ketta (Samira Wiley). His passion for the sport pulls him into a D.C. boxing gym housed in a youth recreation center on the verge of closing, where he works under Coach Slim (Pierce) mentoring boys training for the junior national boxing tournament. Two of the gym’s top young fighters, best friends Quincey (Toussaint Francois Battiste) and Peanut (Anthony B. Jenkins), go head-to-head for a spot on the U.S. Junior Olympic Team, revealing how second chances can shape not only their love for the sport, but their lives.
The supporting cast includes J. Alphonse Nicholson, Andre Royo, Mykelti Williamson, Tory J. Malone, Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, and Amanda Warren.
‘They Fight’ is co-written by Candis and Andrew Renzi. Renzi also produces alongside Jason Michael Berman and Ben Renzo. Production is complete, and the film will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu. The project received support from the Maryland Film Commission and the Maryland Film Tax Credit.
