Denzel Washington And Antoine Fuqua’s Hannibal Epic To Begin Production This Summer In Italy For Netflix
Production to be held at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios
Director Antoine Fuqua and Netflix are moving forward with their long-developing historical epic about legendary Carthaginian commander Hannibal Barca, with Denzel Washington set to star in the lead role. Production is scheduled to begin this summer in Italy, with filming based at the iconic Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
The film will explore Hannibal’s historic military campaign against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War, including his famous march into Italy with war elephants and the string of victories that allowed Carthaginian forces to control much of southern Italy for years before his eventual defeat at the Battle of Zama.
The screenplay was written by Academy Award winner John Logan, whose credits include The Aviator and Gladiator. Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, known for films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and JFK, will handle the film’s visuals.
Washington will also produce alongside Erik Olsen, Adam Goldworm, and Fuqua through his Hill District Media banner.
The project marks the sixth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua, who first teamed up on the Oscar-winning Training Day and most recently worked together on The Equalizer 3.
Fuqua’s upcoming film Michael, a biopic about Michael Jackson, is scheduled to debut in theaters and IMAX on April 24.
