Dreamgirls will never leave you! Producers Sonia Friedman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze have officially announced that the Tony Award–winning musical will return to Broadway in Fall 2026, with Camille A. Brown set to direct and choreograph.
The original ‘Dreamgirls’ production, directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, premiered at the Imperial Theatre in 1981 and starred Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Jennifer Holliday. The musical, inspired partly by Motown’s meteoric rise to popularity and its 1960s and 70s girl groups, centers on three young Black women navigating a tumultuous journey in the music industry.
The show went on to win six Tony Awards, followed by a star-studded 2001 Actors Fund benefit concert featuring Audra McDonald, Lillias White, Heather Headley, Billy Porter, and Norm Lewis. In 2006, Bill Condon adapted the musical into a film starring Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy. A decade later, Amber Riley headlined the London revival in 2016.
Now, nearly 45 years after its debut, ‘Dreamgirls’ is set to return next fall. Production is launching an international talent search to find the new Dreamgirls, with open calls in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris.
