Karine Jean-Pierre is stepping into a new spotlight—this time on the awards stage.
The former White House press secretary for President Joe Biden has been tapped to host the 17th Annual African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards, set for February 8 in Los Angeles. The ceremony honors excellence in film as voted on by more than 100 AAFCA members and continues the organization’s tradition of spotlighting diverse and impactful storytelling.
Jean-Pierre joins a notable lineage of AAFCA hosts, following comedian Amber Ruffin, who led last year’s film awards, and singer Jordin Sparks, who emceed the 2025 television honors. This year’s honorees include Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, director Ryan Coogler, and animated standout KPop Demon Hunters.
While Jean-Pierre is one of the most recognizable communicators in American politics—having made history as the first Black and first openly LGBTQ White House press secretary—she’s clear that the night isn’t about her.
Her goal as host, she’s emphasized, is simple: keep the focus on the artists, celebrate their work, and let the room shine. It’s a philosophy she carried from the press briefing room to the stage—don’t make yourself the story.
Accepting the hosting role was an easy decision for Jean-Pierre, who has long admired AAFCA’s mission and leadership. She sees the awards as a vital space for honoring storytellers who reflect the full range of humanity and Black creative excellence.
Hosting the ceremony also signals a broader evolution in her post-White House journey. Rather than following the traditional path into political punditry, Jean-Pierre is leaning into storytelling, culture, and community impact—areas she believes are just as powerful in shaping narratives and inspiring the next generation.
AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson praised Jean-Pierre as a natural fit, citing her credibility, media background, and cultural awareness as key reasons she brings the right energy to the stage.
As the awards approach, Jean-Pierre views the evening as more than a celebration—it’s a reminder of the importance of visibility, legacy, and joy.
At a time when representation and inclusion remain under pressure, the AAFCA Awards, with Jean-Pierre at the helm, aim to offer exactly that: a moment to honor Black brilliance, loudly and unapologetically.
