Idris Elba is officially stepping back into the shoes of detective John Luther, leading a new feature-length installment for Netflix. The project marks another return to the dark, psychological world originally crafted by creator Neil Cross, continuing the legacy of the acclaimed BBC crime series.
This new chapter finds Luther once again drawn into the shadows as London faces a spree of brutal and unexplained murders. Though the detective has been pushed to the margins, he’s secretly pulled back in—raising the question of whether he can save the city when danger comes from every direction, including those once considered allies.
Elba’s portrayal of Luther has long defined the character: intense, relentless, and deeply human. The actor previously returned in the 2023 Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun, which extended the story beyond the series’ original five seasons. Now, his comeback promises a deeper dive into Luther’s internal battles and the grim moral lines he continues to cross in his pursuit of justice.
Filming begins in February, with the story once again penned by Cross and directed by Jamie Payne, who has directed previous Luther episodes and The Fallen Sun, ensuring a seamless continuation of its signature tone. Elba also returns as a producer through his 22Summers banner.
No release date has been announced yet, but the anticipation for Luther’s next descent into the darkness is already high.
