The Peele and Raimi produced ‘Portrait of GOD’ will be a feature adaptation of the viral short by YouTuber Dylan Clark.
The film follows a devout woman who discovers the terrifying answer to the question: “What does God look like?”
Universal Pictures has acquired the rights, marking the first collaboration between Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.
Clark, who wrote and directed the 2022 short, will return to helm the adaptation and co-write the screenplay with Joe Russo. The original film—which has earned more than 8.6 million views on YouTube—follows a devout young woman preparing a school presentation on a mysterious painting known as the “Portrait of God,” a canvas that appears as a blank void to some but reveals a disturbing, skeletal figure to others.
Producers include Peele and Win Rosenfeld for Monkeypaw, and Raimi and Romel Adam for Ghost House, with Chris Rosati serving as executive producer. Universal’s Sara Scott and Ghost House’s Jose Cañas will oversee the project.
The feature aims to expand the short’s unsettling religious and psychological themes, blending Peele’s modern social-horror sensibilities with Raimi’s signature supernatural edge. With two of horror’s most influential creators backing the project, Portrait of God is shaping up to be one of the genre’s most anticipated upcoming releases.
