The horror hit The Mortuary Assistant is making the leap from console to cinema. Inspired by the breakout 2022 video game, the film arrives in theaters February 13 through Epic Pictures before streaming exclusively on Shudder beginning March 27.
The story centers on Rebecca Owens, a newly licensed mortician who takes on an overnight shift embalming bodies alone. What starts as a routine assignment quickly spirals into terror as she encounters sinister forces tied to demonic rituals, her mysterious mentor, and unresolved trauma from her past. As the night unfolds, Rebecca must fight to keep from becoming the next vessel for possession.
The cast features Keena Ferguson who acts alongside leads Willa Holland and Paul Sparks plus John Adams, and Mark Steger, who takes on the chilling role of The Mimic.
Directed by Jeremiah Kipp and written by game creator Brian Clarke and Tracee Beebe, the adaptation expands the eerie mythology that made the original game a viral success. After first launching on PC, the title grew a devoted following and later rolled out across Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, cementing its place as a modern indie horror favorite.
Produced by Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures through Dread, alongside Cole Payne’s Traverse Media and Jacob P. Heineke, the film deepens the terrifying lore surrounding the demonic entities haunting River Fields — bringing a new level of dread to the big screen.
