Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman has signed on to board Tom Donahue’s forthcoming project. He will serve as an executive producer for ‘Breakout,’ an animated LGBTQ documentary set in Russia amid the country’s rise in anti-LGBTQ laws and the invasion of Ukraine.
The film follows successful businessman Alexei and a doctor named Dimitri, who fall in love during the COVID lockdowns. As their relationship grows, they fight to live openly and without fear while facing state surveillance, criminalization, and threats of being sent to the front lines of the war. The documentary weaves together first-person testimony with animation and dramatic reenactments.
Freeman shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Stories like ‘Break Out’ remind us why cinema matters. This is not only about survival; it’s about love, courage, and living freely.”
The documentary is set to premiere during next year’s festival season.
