Independent filmmaker R. Cadell Cook is earning widespread acclaim for his latest feature, Perfectly Us, a poignant story that has made waves on both the festival and streaming circuits. The film was recently showcased at the Prince George’s County Film Festival and is now streaming on Tubi, where it is spotlighted in both the Recommended and Black Independent Cinema categories.
At its heart, Perfectly Us is a deeply human narrative exploring love, communication, father-son relationships, and the sustaining power of community. The film embodies Cook’s vision of using art as a mirror—inviting audiences to reflect on their own experiences while holding onto hope.
Adding to its local significance, the film stars Michael J. Patterson and Tiffany Yancey, who also served as Executive Producers alongside Cook. Together, the trio represents the DMV’s thriving creative community, delivering a project that is both locally rooted and universally resonant within Black culture.
“Perfectly Us is proof of what can happen when local talent comes together to tell authentic stories,” says Cook. “We wanted to create something that speaks to the Black community—something that reflects our daily lives, celebrates the impact of fathers and friends, and inspires people to stay connected through it all.”
Unbound by the constraints of Hollywood’s studio system, Cook and his collaborators highlight the power of independent Black filmmaking. Their work demonstrates how local voices can shape national conversations, offering fresh perspectives and affirming portrayals often absent from mainstream media.
As Perfectly Us continues to gain momentum on Tubi and the festival circuit, Cook and his DMV-based collaborators are emerging as rising storytellers whose work blends reflection, empowerment, and hope.
