Ryan Coogler has made BAFTA history, becoming the first Black person to win Best Original Screenplay for ‘Sinners.’
The film also became the most decorated movie by a Black director at this year’s ceremony, earning three awards in total, including Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku and Best Original Score.
During his acceptance speech, Coogler expressed deep gratitude for his cast, crew, and the communities that shaped him: “I come from a community that loves me. They spoke a lot of power and pride into me. They made me believe that I could do this, that I could be a writer,” he said. “And it was amazing to be accepted into more communities, a community of filmmakers, the community of Los Angeles, the community of wherever we went to go make a film. And I hope that all the fellow writers out there, when y’all look at that blank page, think of who you love. Think of anybody who you see in pain that you identify with and wish they feel better, and let that love motivate you like it did on this. I’ll be forever grateful for this. Thank you all.”
Congratulations to Ryan Coogler and the ‘Sinners’ cast and crew on their historic wins.
