Urban Drama ‘3%’ Draws Comparisons To Fruitvale Station And Straight Outta Compton, Sets Theatrical Release
A powerful new independent feature film, 3%, is bringing the streets and spirit of Del Paso Heights to the screen through a gripping story rooted in survival, betrayal, and resilience. Directed by Sacramento native Curshion Jones, the drama is based on true events inspired by the life of Executive Producer Truman Broadnax, who was given only a three percent chance of living after a near-fatal shooting. Broadnax shared that being told he had only a three percent chance to survive became a turning point in his life, giving him a renewed sense of purpose. He emphasized that the film does not glorify street life, but instead explores the harsh realities, consequences, betrayal, and emotional strength required to rebuild after devastating loss.
The film is led by Dallas native actor Tyrone Betters, known for his role in The Unbreakable Boy, alongside Nupeir Garret, recognized for his acclaimed performance in the hit television series Snowfall. Garret, a graduate of Grant Union High School and a proud product of the Del Paso Heights community, brings an authentic connection to the story’s setting. The cast is further rounded out by Sasha Del Valle, whose performance adds emotional depth to the film’s powerful narrative.
Shot entirely on location in Del Paso Heights, Sacramento, California, the production stands as a community-driven effort that amplifies local voices both on and off screen. The cast and crew include several Grant Union High School alumni, and the production actively employed neighborhood residents, reinforcing its commitment to authenticity and community involvement. The film also received meaningful support from the Office of the Mayor of Sacramento, which assisted in securing filming locations, providing access to city resources, and supporting logistical coordination throughout production.

Jones described the project as a portrayal of survival in its rawest form, highlighting not only the physical fight to live, but the emotional and spiritual journey that follows trauma. He noted that the city’s support of a story rooted in the community demonstrates what is possible when creative vision and civic leadership come together. Produced by Curshion Jones, Jevon Stallworth, and Ronald Richardson under Tru Entertainment, with Broadnax serving as Executive Producer, the drama/crime feature represents a deeply personal and socially grounded cinematic effort.
3% is scheduled for a theatrical release this summer.
